John S. Abbott received the B.S. degree in mathematics from Caltech in 1974 and a Ph.D. in mathematics from MIT in 1979. His doctoral research was in nonlinear waves and perturbation theory. He joined Corning Glass Works (now Corning Incorporated) in 1979, where he is now a Senior Engineering Associate in the Modeling, Simulation and Analytics group in the Manufacturing, Technology, and Engineering division. His interests in optical fibers include fabrication and process understanding, measurement and interpretation of data, product design, and system simulation & modeling. He has 12 US and numerous foreign patents in these fiber topics as well as patents in other areas including glass for LCD displays. He is a co-author for two chapters on multimode optical fibers. An IEEE-SA member, he has contributed to IEEE 802.3 Ethernet projects since 1998, focusing on local area networks and data centers. He is a senior member of OSA, a member of SIAM currently on the industry committee, and a member of the editorial board of IET Optoelectronics.

For JLT he is handling submissions on the following topics:

  • Multi-mode Optical Fibers
  • Optical Fiber Fabrication and Design
  • Link Models and Simulations
  • Optical Fiber Measurements and Characterization
  • Single-Mode Optical Fibers
