He worked as a research scientist in Ken Hill’s group at the Communications Research Centre in Ottawa and then at Alcatel Optronics Canada as Senior scientist responsible for the research and development of new products and applications based on Fiber gratings. In 2004, he was awarded the Canada Research Chair in Advanced Photonic Components at Carleton University (renewed in 2011 and 2018) and since then he has led an active research group with worldwide collaborative activities in various fields of photonics, mostly dealing with optical fiber sensors for physical and biochemical sensing applications. He has chaired the Optical Society of America Topical meeting on Bragg Gratings Photosensitivity and Poling, the International Optical Fiber Sensors Conference, and Photonics North in addition to serving on the Technical Program committee of several other conferences for IEEE, OSA, and SPIE. He has been an Associate Editor for Optics Express from 2007 to 2013 and Guest Editor for special issues of the IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology and of Optical Fiber Technology. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America.
